Description

Language diversity: from the perspective of descriptive linguistics

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers working on less described languages of the world in order to present grammatical phenomena unique to those languages, and to contribute to the enrichment of typological studies and theoretical linguistics. Many languages of the world are minority languages and not well described. Theoretical linguists rely on such less well-described languages for data. However, they may impose their native speaker's intuition on such non-native languages. But if theoretical linguists are exposed enough descriptive studies of minority languages, it might become apparent that the linguistic diversity is very great. The data from the descriptive linguistics will broaden our perspective of language.

The workshop will also be a place for field researchers to share problems they are facing in documenting languages and to be exposed to suggestions from linguists working in other areas of linguistics.
